Michael Carrick

Michael CarrickThe former West Ham and Spurs midfielder was one of the most efficient in plying his trade: retrieving the ball with key challenges, especially as the opponent would be looking to break, and having an eye for the defence-splitting pass that would exploit the gaps left by the potential counter. At the ripe old age of 34, however, he simply doesn’t retain the legs required for his preferred role; he finds more comfort in the safer sideways or backwards pass and the defensive part of his game in terms of interceptions or ball-winning tackles seems all but a thing of the past. Injuries have played their part, but it is clear that the Jordie’s best years are well behind him.
