Former cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson gave his thoughts on Tyson Fury telling Anthony Joshua to vacate his WBO title to make their fight.

“It’s business, these guys know that they are bigger than the belts right now,” said Nelson. “So they’re in that lucrative position where Tyson and Anthony Joshua, are bigger than the belts. Not very often do you get fighters that can do that, that can step above that.

“And they are in that great position where they can do it. And that’s why him [Fury] saying that to AJ, I’m quite sure it’s something he’d do as well. Because it’s business, it’s good business, and it’s a big fight. And realistically, you can tag a title to it, but you’ve got the best two in the world.

“So, it don’t matter if the WBO says ‘he’s not our champion,” well yeah yeah whatever. So I can understand him saying that. And again it’s what you’re chasing for,”

“I know you fight like hell to get the titles but, if the governing bodies decide not to play ball with them, then it’s their loss, it’s not the fighter’s loss. Because, officially everybody knows the score, everybody knows who’s who,” he added.

What is the possibility of a Tyson Fury Anthony Joshua mega-fight?

Tyson Fury (31-0-1, 21 KOs) is the WBC, lineal, and The Ring heavyweight champion while Anthony Joshua (23-1, 21 KOs) is the unified WBA (Super), WBO, IBF, and IBO heavyweight champion of the world. Sharing all the major heavyweight titles between themselves, the two British boxers are looking to unify the belts to crown an undisputed champion.

Before that, Fury has to get past his next opponent, Deontay Wilder, in a trilogy bout. Also, Joshua has to beat the IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev at the end of this year to have a possibility of facing Fury.

The bout has been targeted to take place for a very long time but hasn’t been able to happen due to one reason or another. Now, as both parties have signed an agreement to face each other in 2021, they have to retain their titles in order for the mega-bout to take place. This, however, is easier said than done.
