The Chelsea football team currently sits atop the Premier League standings for the 2016-17 season. One of the stalwarts of the team is John Terry. Including his youth career, Chelsea captain Terry has spent 22 years in the team. The 37-year-old veteran can be described as a vital cog in Chelsea’s line-up. He has been one of the most successful players for Chelsea when their form was at its peak. Terry is an intelligent player and has the capability to analyze the game well. In short, John Terry is a sensational player.

He is considered a complete player because he thinks both offensively and defensively. The Englishman has the ability to bury the ball in the back of the net and his defence is the main factor in his answering the call of national duty. Jose Mourinho, Manchester United’s manager, greatly admires Terry and he said that “John is my captain, he’s Chelsea’s captain and he’s the player’s captain. He’s a big guy for us.”

Chelsea’s John Terry

Against weaker teams, Chelsea starts off slow and gradually builds up their attack. But when the team is facing off against stronger opponents, the tactics change to a more defensive one. This is when they need to summon some of Terry’s tenacity. When the opportunity arises, the Blues will initiate an effective counter-attack. This was put to good use against Manchester City when they fired in three goals after halftime. But what lets them down is their percentage of possession; the Blues are simply lax about the ball possession. In the 3-0 drubbing by Arsenal, Chelsea made a number of errors and within 15 minutes, Arsenal raced to a 2-0 lead, a third goal from Mesut Ozil was the final nail in the coffin. Another feature of their playing style is that Chelsea prefers to sniff out openings and shoot when the time is right. A fine example would be Chelsea’s nail-biting victory over second placed Tottenham. After going 2 goals up and the latter team equalizing, Chelsea fired in 2 more goals to win the match 4-2.

Despite ruling the roost at the moment, Antonio Conte’s men should not rest on their laurels. It is imperative for them to turn up the wick to stay on top of the chasing pack. It is great that the Blues are doing well, but the question is, can they sustain it? The result of their spectacular play can be seen how their records have indicated :betting top 10 that they are a force to reckon. Out of a potential 32 matches, Chelsea have lost 5 and drawn 3. A notable loss was against Manchester United 2-0. Defence was weak due to the absence of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to injury, and replacement keeper Asmir Begovic was humiliated by United’s strikers. In a 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace, Chelsea squandered a 1-0 lead to let in 2 goals in the span of 2 minutes. They had a 0-2 loss to Tottenham, after Dele Alli slotted it into the back post on both occasions. Against West Ham, it was a case of missed chance upon missed chance for Chelsea and the only consolation was a last gasp goal by Gary Cahill to end the match 2-1. These are prime examples that Chelsea still have a few chinks in their armor and need to plug the holes.

This is a time where the side needs to summon the kind of fighting spirit, foresight and knowledge of the game, that was normally associated with Terry. But whether they can borrow from his never-say-die attitude, remains to be seen.
