Crazy Stats from the Djokovic Vesely Second Round Monte Carlo Masters Match

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Czech Jiri Vesely in the second round of the first tournament of clay season, Monte Carlo Masters. Jiri Vesely beat Djokovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in 2 hours six minutes.

Djokovic after the match said, “Obviously it’s not easy to lose the match in terms of accepting it right after exiting the court. But I have to congratulate my opponent. I think he played very solid. He was serving very big. He was playing tactically good and aggressive.”

We bring you some facts from the biggest upset in Tennis in 2016, that is, the Djokovic Vesely match at Monte Carlo Masters.

His last defeat to player outside the Top 50 was against 74 ranked Xavier Malisse in 2010, just before Wimbledon at the Queen’s Club. He lost 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 in the 3rd round. Since then, he was 106-0 versus outside the Top 50. At that time he had only one grand slam to his name, the Australian Open of 2008. It was also his 6th Defeat to players ranked above 20 in his career.

The last time Djokovic lost a season opener on clay was at the hands of Roger Federer, when he lost in three sets to the then world number 1 and was ranked 67. Before losing to Vesely today, his record was 40-1 in opening match at any clay event.

Before the match against Jiri Vesely, Djokovic had 82-1 record against players younger to him. He was also on a 51 match unbeaten streak against such players before Vesely defeated him. Vesely ages 22, and Djokovic will be 29 next month.

Since losing to Federer in the finals of Cincinnati Masters just before the US Open last year, Djokovic had won 22 Masters 1000 matches before losing out at Monte Carlo. This year, the World No.1 had a 28-1 record with winning 4 titles and won his 11th Grand slam after defeating Andy Murray in straight sets of the finals of Australian Open.

Djokovic had 80-5 record over the last 52 weeks, while Vesely had an even win loss record of 29 each. This also turned out to be Djokovic’s first real loss of the season. However, he had retired with an eye-injury during a match in the Dubai Open.

Djokovic had won consecutive 24 sets since losing a set in Indian Wells to world No. 149 Bjorn Fratangelo. Incidentally, it was his first set of that tournament. He then won the next 12 matches in straight sets and took home the first two master events of 2016.

Till now, Jiri Vesely had never defeated a player in the Top 10, he had 0-8 record against them. He had also lost his last nine meetings against all Top 20 players.

Also, it turned out to be the second time when Vesely won more than a match at a masters event. The last it happened was two years ago in Indian Wells.

Barring the king of clay, Rafael Nadal, the last left hander to beat Djokovic was Michael Llodra in 2010 at Roland Garros in Paris. Jiri Vesely turned out to be the third left hander to beat Djokovic.

The Last time Djokovic failed to reach a Masters 1000 final was in Shanghai 2014 (11 consecutive finals). Also, this was his 11th out of his last 44 losses against players outside the Top 10.
