A good start by Valtteri Bottas came undone in a brake testing battle with Raikkonen and Verstappen. Raikkonen received a love tap from his compatriot and bumped an unsuspecting Verstappen in the process. Two broken suspensions later, it was an early shower for the not-so-Flying Dutchman and a photo session with a distraught fan for The Iceman. The young Frenchman was in tears following Raikkonen’s retirement, but a visit to the paddock and a picture with his idol soon cheered him up.

After getting involved in the first lap shenanigans, Bottas’ engine gave up and he came to a spluttering halt. It was not surprising to see him retire from the race however, He had reverted to an older engine following an issue with his second power unit.

Sebastian Vettel made the most of his launch to seize the lead from pole-sitter Hamilton. But, a Virtual Safety Car threw a spanner in the works, to make matters worse for the Maranello team, Mercedes decided to put Hamilton on the white-walled medium compound tires while Vettel was on the yellow-walled soft compound tires following the first round of pitstops. By the second round of pitstops, Vettel was on the mediums and Hamilton was on the faster softs. A titanic battle later, Hamilton swept past a defenceless Vettel and took the lead for good.

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel were so far ahead that they nearly lapped the entire field. As mentioned earlier, Ricciardo finished a distant 3rd, 75 seconds behind, yep you read that right. No major gains were made in the constructors championship because the ‘Big Three’ each lost one car in the course of the race.
