Indian Men’s Compound team enter the finals of the Archery World Cup

The first stage of the Archery world Cup is being conducted in Shanghai. The Indian Men’s compound team have been able to draw a stunning performance in the semi-finals by defeating the top seeded USA team by 2 points. The fairly inexperienced Indian team comprising of Abhishek Verma, Chinna Raj Srither and Amanjeet Singh totaled a score of 232 against 230 from the USA team.

The Indian team defeated Iran in the quarterfinals with a two point margin as well. They will next face the tenth seeded Columbian team in the finals of the event on 20 May. This will conclude the first leg of the World Cup after the Olympics last year. The next stages will be held in Antalya, Salt Lake City, and Berlin before the finals in Rome in September.

The fate of the other Indian teams competing in the tournament was not as bright. The Recurve Men’s team lost to Japan in the quarterfinals 6-0 in a disappointing match. The Recurve mixed team lost 3-5 to Russia in the quarterfinals. The Compound mixed team of Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam lost 152-158 to Korea in the semifinal. They will next face the USA in the bronze medal on 20. The women’s compound team was defeated by Denmark in the quarters by six points.

Ankita Bhakat competing in the women recurve singles lost to France’s Audrey Adiceom 4-0 in the second round. Monika Saren too bowed out against Kazakh archer Farida Tukebayeva after an evenly contested match. Preeti defeated Alexandra Longova in the second round 7-3. Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari were given byes in the second round of their respective recurve events. Das will now face Turkey’s Erdal Meric Dal in the third round. Deepika will compete in an all Indian match against Preeti.

In Men’s Recurve, Vishwash defeated Li Jialun 6-5 to take a place in the third round. He will be up against Japan’s Furukawa Takaharu. Dhaniram Basumatary lost out 0-6 to China’s Ding Liye in a one-sided contest. Indrachand Swami was defeated by Steve Wijler of Netherlands 2-6 in the second round.

Abhishek Verma competing in Compound Men’s got a bye in the second round and will be up against Slovenia’s Dejan Sitar in the third round. Chinna Raju Srither emerged victorious against Jose Carlos Ospina and will face Bridger Deaton from America in the next round. In another all Indian faceoff, Amanjeet Singh lost out to Gurwinder Singh. Divya Dhayal in Women’s Compound defeated Sandra Herve of France and will face Iran’s Parisa Baratchi in the third round. Parveena lost out to Linda Ochoa Anderson 138-143.

The Indian stars Atanu and Deepika are the spearheads of the Indian hopes at the World Cup. No less can be expected from the Compound team in the finals as well. They will be witnessing a huge confidence boost after defeating the top seed in the semis.
