South Africa’s Kevin Anderson shocked everyone when he defeated Roger Federer in 5 sets. The odds were stacked heavily against the South African as Federer was the overwhelming favourite. But this match seemed to be a battle of endurance as Anderson slowly wore the Swiss World Number 1 down.

In the end, the final score read, 2-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 13-11. All it took were 4 hours and 14 minutes for Anderson to triumph. All in all, it was an incredible matchup. Anderson was also the first player in this tournament to break Federer’s straight set winning streak.

The Swiss ace eased through the first set and play his very best tennis to baffle Anderson. But he responded with a tense second set tie-break. However, Federer won his 34th consecutive set at Wimbledon. It would seem that another semi-final was inevitable.

But Anderson had other ideas. The world No 8 staved off a Match Point from Federer in the third set. He went on to break and take the set for himself in the process. Then the match was turned on its head, as Federer struggled to make any dent in Anderson fiercely powerful serve. Meanwhile, Anderson kept hitting winner after winner on his forehand.

Now, Anderson awaits the winner between John Isner and Milos Raonic. To tell you the truth, Isner knows a thing or two about marathon matches.
