Four-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi is expected to be out for up to eight weeks with a tear in the internal collateral ligament, the club confirmed on its website. The Argentine captain suffered the injury just after 10 minutes in the first half after being caught while taking a shot.

Messi was taken to the hospital after his injury and the initial reports suggested that the tests on the Argentine international were inconclusive but the team have now announced that the Barcelona forward could be out for upto two months.

The 28-year-old could miss the next eight games and faces a challenge to be fit enough for the first El Clasico of the season against Real Madrid on November 22.

His injury adds to the list of several troubles that the Catalan club are facing at the moment. FIFA recently declined to entertain the Blaugrana’s request of registering Arda Turan, and with the departure of Xavi Hernandez and Pedro Rodriguez, Luis Enrique will surely have a headache guiding the team at least till January, given the long list of injury issues they are facing this season.
