“I Had Him for 32 Years..”: Decades After Father’s Unfortunate Demise, Michael Jordan Opened Up on His Dad’s ‘Thoughtful’ Nature in 2017

NBA legend Michael Jordan was hit with a piece of devastating news in 1993. His father, James Jordan was murdered by two convicts which shocked the world. This affected MJ who was one of the best players in the league during that time playing for the Chicago Bulls. During an interview in 2017, he opened up on his father’s demise and what he remembers about him.

To start off, Jordan mentioned that his father was a very thoughtful man. He regularly advised his son on how to take important decisions and this helped make Jordan who he is today. During the same interview, MJ revealed the advice his father always gave him among other things.

James Jordan was an important figure in the life of Michael Jordan. He was very supportive of his son and his teachings helped the six-time NBA champion become who he is today.

During an old interview that was released in 2017, the Billionaire talked about the one piece of advice which helped him a lot. James Jordan advised his son to always take a pause before taking any major decision and say ‘what if‘. Needless to say, His Airness still follows his father’s advice three decades after his tragic demise.

Jordan said, “You know, he’s a very thoughtful guy. The thing that I remember the most about my father and you know, I had him for 32 years and I never look at it from a negative sense. Obviously, he was murdered and you know, rarely do I get the chance to talk about him.”

Being one of the most recognizable faces in the world, Jordan needs to measure all his steps. And his father’s advice definitely helped him a lot. Additionally, MJ’s mother also regularly advises her son to keep his ‘nose clean’.

Jordan retired shortly after his father’s death

Michael Jordan was on top of the basketball world having won three NBA titles already when his father’s death hit him. Roughly two weeks after this incident, he announced his retirement.

Jordan said, “And I thought that there are times in one’s life when you have to put games aside. I wanted to give more time to my family. I’ve been very selfish about centering things on my basketball career.”

He would make a sensational return during the 1994-95 season and he went on to win three more titles with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan would retire again and but this wasn’t his final retirement! He returned for a short two-year stint with the Washington Wizards before retiring once and for all after the 2002-03 NBA season.
