Shivnarine Chanderpaul announces his retirement from International Cricket

West Indies veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul announced his retirement and ended his 22 year old international career today. He ended up as the second highest run scorer(11,867) in Tests for West Indies, only 86 runs behind Brian Lara(11,953).

Chanderpaul also ended as the seventh highest run getter overall in test cricket after playing 164 test matches. The retirement seems to come on the back of playing in the Masters Champions League, a T20 tournament for retired cricketers. Chanderpaul has last played for West Indies in may last year after which he was unceremoniously dropped for the test series at home versus Australia.

Chanderpaul informed the West Indies Cricket Board of his decision via an email, the WICB in a press release said. President of the WICB Dave Cameron said, “The WICB acknowledges the invaluable contribution Shiv has made to the game globally, and we wish him all the best.”

Chanderpaul is only the second modern day cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar, whose career has spanned over two decades. He made 30 centuries in Tests and averaged 51.37. One of his unique records include batting unbeaten for 25 hours in a test series. He achieved this feat against India in 2002, when he faced 1050 deliveries between his two dismissals.

As he bid adieu on a great career, his fans pays him a tribute.
