Top 5 Signings of the January Transfer window so far

The winter transfer window which opened on January 1st, gives managers and clubs the opportunity to bring in players to help bolster their squad as they prepare for a grueling second half of the season.With clubs scrambling to find the right fit to improve their squad, let us take a look at some of the deals which have really caught our eye so far.

  1. Oscar (Chelsea-Shanghai SPG)

Chinese side Shanghai SPG completed the signing of Oscar from Chelsea for a fee worth to be around 60 million pounds, making him the seventh most expensive player in football. The Brazilian joins the list of high profile names to join the Chinese Super league, which has recently gained a lot of ground owing to an enormous amount of money which has been invested in Chinese football. The 25 -year- old play maker cut an increasingly frustrated figure at the Bridge after falling out of favor  with Chelsea manager Antonio Conte during the first half of the season. The incredible wages offered and the guarantee of first team football convinced Oscar to make the switch to the Chinese Super League.

2.Julian Draxler (Wolfsburg-Paris Saint- Germain)

Paris Saint- Germain completed the signing of Julian Draxler from Wolfsburg on a four and a half year deal, estimated to be about $40 million. Draxler was initially tipped to join Premier league side Arsenal, but opted to join the French Champions instead. The 23 year old German publicly expressed his discontent over life at Wolfsburg and was keen on a possible move to France. Draxler joined Wolfsburg in 2015 netting in 23 goals in 153 Bundesliga appearances. He will be keen on replicating his form for PSG as they hope to improve their performances following a poor start to the season.

3. Carlos Tevez (Boca Juniors- Shanghai Shenhua)

Carlos Tevez is another player who opted to join the Chinese Super league, attracted by their lucrative wage figures. Tevez’s move from Boca Juniors to Shanghai Shenhua will make him the worlds highest paid player. The Argentine International will earn close to 615,000 pounds a week which will see him leapfrog the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as football’s top earner. Tevez waved goodbye to his beloved Boca fans in his last game  where he scored his 47th goal for the club as the beat Colon 4-1. He will now join the Shanghai based team currently managed by Gus Poyet.

4. Morgan Schneiderlin (Manchester United- Everton)

On Thursday, January 12th, Everton announced the signing of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United. The French International signed a four and a half year deal with the club for a $24 million fee which will keep him with the side until 2021. The midfielder will reunite with manager Ronald Koeman, who he previously worked with at Southampton .

Opta reports that Schneiderlin has made more tackles and interceptions combined(772) than any other Premier League side since August 2012. The Merseyside club will be hoping that Schneiderlin can produce similar numbers for the side, as they contest for a place in the Europa League next year.

5. Nathan Ake (Bournemouth – Chelsea)- Loan Switch

Chelsea decided to recall youngster Nathan Ake back from AFC Bournemouth . The defenders impressive performances for Bournemouth has prompted Antonio Conte to bring him back, as Chelsea look to add strength in depth to their squad. The defenders versatility at the back will prove a defining factor in the Chelsea’s pursuit of the Premier League Title. Ake joined the club in 2011, but has since been loaned out to Reading, Watford and Bournemouth as he struggled for a place in Chelsea’s starting 11. This time however, he will be hoping to cement his place in the squad and become a regular.
