Mike Perry and Robbie Lawler are, reportedly, set to face each other at UFC 255 in November. A former champion, Lawler is riding a four-fight losing streak in the UFC. This is why facing a hungry and relatively young Mike Perry isn’t what’s best for him at this point in his career.

Judging by his performance in his recent outings, retirement isn’t a far-fetched idea for the 38-year-old Lawler whose last outing came against Neil Magny. The latter outclassed a past-his-prime Lawler en route to a unanimous nod from the judges. While Lawler looked good physically and mentally, it just seems he has lost that edge over his younger counterparts.
Mike Perry broke his losing skid against Mickey Gall earlier this year. More than his performance, Perry made the headlines for having only his girlfriend in his corner. However, after the fight, Perry made it clear that he is not looking to stick to his ways of training alone.
A while later, Perry revealed that he was training with middleweight Yoel Romero. Training with the seasoned Cuban middleweight would really help Perry with his wrestling. As far as his striking is concerned, Perry has been traditionally a fighter who is willing to stand and trade with his opponents. The approach has not paid off every time, but it has certainly helped him mature over time.
Is Robbie Lawler making too quick of a turnaround after his loss to Neil Magny?
‘Ruthless‘ Robbie Lawler is a seasoned veteran who has been around the sport for nearly two decades. In this time, he has had brutal wars with the likes of Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald that have gone down as the best fights in UFC welterweight history. Given the hard-hitting nature of those fights, one has to wonder if Lawler has taken too much damage.

If Lawler faces Perry, he would be making a turnaround in less than three months of time. It is not the ideal way to go about things for a fighter nearing his 40s. But then, that’s Robbie Lawler for you.

His opponent, Mike Perry, would look to utilize his strength against the former champion. Once considered a top prospect in the division, ‘Platinum’ has fallen off from that position. However, he is still evolving with every outing. In his last fight against Mickey Gall, he showed how easily he can dictate the proceedings.

Keeping the physical aspects aside, Mike Perry may prove to be the mental kryptonite for Lawler. He is a fighter who is looking to climb up the rankings as he enters his prime. Lawler, on the other hand, is an aging veteran who is probably looking to return to his winning ways as his career draws to a close.
Lawler would have been much better off facing a veteran like himself in the twilight of his career. Meanwhile, Perry might just want to win this fight way more than the former champion does.
