Wimbledon 2017 is underway, and although it’s only the first week into the tournament, there have already been a few upsets on the court. We take a look at some of the major results that the tournament witnessed in the very first round.
Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori sent packing
Bidding for a career slam, Stan Wawrinka’s hopes of becoming just the ninth player to win all the four slams were crushed by the rising youngster Daniil Medvev. He pulled of the upset of the tournament so far beating Wawrinka in four sets (6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1). Stan who has struggled on grass before, never quite looked relaxed and also looked to carry a knee injury. Stan’s hopes of reaching world no.1 were also crushed with this defeat, and he will hope that he will have a better tournament next year. Kei Nishikori the Japanese number one has been knocked out of the championships by the in-form Bautista Agut in four sets. He becomes the highest seed after Wawrinka to be knocked out.
