England held their nerve to stage a 10 run victory over Sri Lanka to book the 2nd semi-final berth from 1. This means that South Africa and Sri Lanka are out of the tournament.
Chasing 172 to keep their semi-final hopes alive, Sri Lankan was reduced to tatters by the English bowling. The chase seemed to be going no where until Perera and Mathews started targeting the English spinners and clobbering them for huge sixes. Perera got out and Mathews and the new batsman Dasun kept Sri Lanka within the required rate. However, a one handed stunner by Joe Root at mid-off to dismiss Dasun changed the course of the game. Some fine death bowling and tight fielding prevented a late come back by the Sri Lankan batsmen.
Earlier England rode on Butler’s fifty to end on a high note after struggling through the middle overs. Jason Roy and Joe Root chipped in with some meaningful contribution.
