Real Madrid came out as 2-1 winners against Athletic Bilbao to go at the top of La Liga after 9 match days. It was a nerve-wrecking match for the Madrid supporters, as their team left it late to snatch all three points and capitalize on Atletico’s slip at Sevilla this week. Here are the five major talking points from the match. ISCO STARTS AGAIN It might be good news for the Real Madrid fans as Isco is getting a lot of games under his belt recently. There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the 24-year-old Spanish midfielder that the player is not happy at the Bernabeu because of a lack of matches. With Luka Modric's injury, Zidane had switched to Isco to play the playmaker role and so far he hasn’t disappointed the Frenchman. Isco scored two goals against Real Betis in the last outing for Real Madrid in the Liga and was rewarded with a starting place ahead of James Rodriguez against Athletic club at home. After the performance, he gave against the Basque side, it is almost certain that Isco will continue to dazzle the Madrid supporters, at least until Modric returns. REAL MADRID DEFENSE THE REAL PROBLEM Madrid have a major problem at hand with just two clean sheets in 13 matches so far. Athletic club have not been a great goal scoring side so far this season mostly because they have missed their star striker Aduriz. Nevertheless, Madrid managed to concede again, due to a defensive blunder. The signs are not good for the Blancos and yet another mistake from Pepe nearly cost them the match. Sergio Ramos’ injury hasn’t been as big a problem as thought initially. Even with their captain fit, Madrid have lacked their defensive stability without Casemiro. The Brazilian has been a rock for Madrid in the midfield and his injury has been a great setback for the all whites. If Madrid has to maintain their challenge for the title this season, they will have to improve their defence in the future. ALVARO MORATA THE HERO FOR MADRID Alvaro Morata was the hero for Madrid as he came off the bench to score the winner in the 83rd minute against Bilbao. Athletic club were set to take what would have been a very well deserve point from the Santiago Bernabeu but with an error in defence from the Basque side, Morata went ahead of his marker and scored from a Gareth Bale cross. The goal raises the question whether the Spanish striker, who celebrated his 24th birthday with an important winning goal for Madrid, start more often than he does in place of Karim Benzema. Even though Benzema scored the opening goal of the match, his overall play was again poor. Morata is continuously putting great performances as a substitute. Now, Zidane has a tough decision to make. CRISTIANO RONALDO FAILS TO FIND THE BACK OF THE NET It has been 38 days since Cristiano Ronaldo last scored at the Santiago Bernabeu. Against Bilbao on Sunday, he should have scored on at least three separate occasions. With just four goals in nine appearances by his club in all competitions, this is the worst run of form for Ronaldo in the Real Madrid shirt. It will be safe to say that Ronaldo will start scoring more frequently at some point of time considering the abilities that he possesses. The 31-year-old's injury in the Euro’16 final is still taking a toll on his performance but Madrid needs their talisman back if they are to challenge for any silverware this season. REAL MADRID GO TOP OF THE TABLE Morata’s late winner means that Real Madrid go at top of La Liga with 21 points from 9 games. Atletico Madrid lost 1-0 to Sevilla, who are just a point behind the Blancos at second. Barcelona are a further point behind Sevilla at third and Villareal complete the top four with 19 points, behind Barcelona on goal difference. Atleti are fifth with 18 points. Madrid have been top of the table for most of the season. However they dropped to second on goal difference after three draws in a row. It hasn’t been the smoothest of starts for the big three of the Liga as both Barcelona and Atletico have already lost on at least one occaision. Villareal are the only team apart from Real Madrid who have not lost so far this season in the league. There are clear indications already that this will be a wonderful league season.
