Ron Howard’s Rush made waves in the F1 and motor racing community back in 2013. The movie highlighted the fierce rivalry between Ferrari driver Niki Lauda and McLaren’s James Hunt during the 1976 season. Now, in 2019, a new movie will be releasing that delves into the world of motor racing.

To be more specific, the movie is called ‘Ford vs Ferrari’, starring Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Jon Bernthal and others. This movie will be showcasing the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The biographical drama will be directed by James Mangold.

Back in 1966, Ford and Ferrari shared a huge rivalry at Le Mans and the Maranello squad almost always took top honours. The Italian team triumphed in 7 out of 7 editions, even taking 6 in a row.

But then, 1966 changed everything when Ford came out with the GT40 Mark II. The rivalry began when Ford decided to buy Ferrari because of their prominence and their success at Le Mans.

Ferrari’s CEO, Enzo Ferrari had also shared keen interest in the deal. But one tiny detail made Ferrari do a volte face. Ford were hoping to gain control over Ferrari’s racing and automotive division. To say that he was furious would be an understatement.

Left red-faced at the rejection, Henry Ford’s only objective was “Go to Le Mans, and beat Ferrari’s ass.”

The Scuderia soon rolled out their 330 P3, which was largely expected to win. However, Ford had an ace up their sleeve, enter the GT40 Mark II, dubbed the Ferrari killer.

They got off to a wonky start with the Italians embarrassing them most of the way until Caroll Shelby took over the reins.

Meanwhile, Ferrari had developed the 330 P4 in 1966, a heavy step above the car it was based on, the P3. Enzo had even developed an entirely new V12 engine for the car.
