United States forward Alex Morgan took to social media to react to the news that Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo will not face any prosecution over the allegations of rape.

Prosecutors on Monday announced that the Portuguese footballer will be relieved from all criminal charges. Former model Kathryn Mayorga had accused Ronaldo of raping her at a Las Vegas hotel back in 2009. However, the Clark County District Attorney’s office opted against initiating any proceedings against the 34-year old.

Alex Morgan, who recently led the United States Women’s National Team to their record fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup title last month, expressed her dissatisfaction at the verdict. The Colorado Rapids striker created a stir on social media after she linked an article titled “Ronaldo is an Icon of Corruption in Sports” with the words “Now this is great journalism”.

The article, which is penned by Brenda Elsey and Jennifer Doyle in the Vice magazine of October last year, highlights the many controversies which surround Cristiano Ronaldo. It not only discusses Mayorga’s alleged claims of rape but also other accusations of sexual assault against the player.

Earlier this year, Ronaldo was fined almost 19m for tax fraud avoiding a 23-month jail sentence. His problems with the justice system regarding financial issues is also highlighted in the article.

“Cristiano Ronaldo offers himself as a monument to masculine perfection. The presentation of Ronaldo as superhuman shrouds both the athlete’s wrongdoings and the rapacity of the corporate thieves running the game,” the article states.

Alex Morgan has never been a fan of Cristiano Ronaldo as she has repeatedly expressed her admiration for rival Lionel Messi. Her “tea-cup celebration” against England in the World Cup semi-final also invited heavy criticism from fans, to which she replied, “You see men celebrating all around the world in big tournaments, grabbing their sacks or whatever it is.”

Morgan was referring to Cristiano Ronaldo’s “cojones” celebration when he scored a hattrick to knock Atletico Madrid out of the Champions League quarter-finals last season.
