“It was the biggest United post on Instagram with two million likes and comments, the most shared United Facebook post ever, the most retweeted post ever and #Alexis7 was the number one trending topic on Twitter worldwide.

“To put all of that into context, the announcement posts generated 75 per cent more interactions than the announcement of the world’s most expensive player last summer when Neymar moved from Barcelona to PSG.

“Alexis Sanchez has also set a new January signing record in terms of shirt sales – three times that previous record.”

These were the words of Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward when United had signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January 2018. After all, Sanchez was getting to wear probably one of the most iconic jerseys in the world of sports. What was not to talk about?

So much was expected from Sanchez. Yet, within a few months, it was all flattering to deceive. According to a study in April, Sanchez had been paid more than anyone else in the Premier League for sitting on the bench. That is how disastrous it has been for the Chile forward. In 32 appearances last season, Sanchez managed to score only three goals.

Appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought a rejuvenated hope at Old Trafford, when people believed that it can also bring about a change in fortunes for their highest paid player. But it was not be.

With Norwegian manager looking to offload Sanchez, United opened up on talks with Inter Milan for the Chilean. Their new manager Antonio Conte was reported to be interested in signing Sanchez.

The huge problem ahead of any team looking to sign Sanchez would be his £ 400,000 a week wages.

Various sources have now reported that Internazioanale and United have agreed over a loan move Sanchez, where Inter will be paying the 30-year old 40% of his wages (around £175,000-a-week). Overall, Inter will pay £7million of the £16million salary that Sanchez will earn during his stay while United will pay the remaining £9million.

Sánchez’s loan is believed to be for 10 months and Inter do not have an option to buy. The former Arsenal man is understood to have his medical in Milan on Wednesday.

Sanchez will join his former teammate Romelu Lukaku when he joins the Italian side. Lukaku was sold by Manchester United earlier this month for a fee around £73 m. This move, if confirmed will limit United to a fairly young front-line with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwwod.
