Andrey Rublev Reveals Tragic Incident After Winning St. Petersburg Open 2020

It has been a great year for Andrey Rublev. Recently, he added another feather to his cap by winning the St. Petersburg Open 2020. The 22-year-old Russian player has had quite a run as he defeated Denis Shapovalov in the semis and then thrashed Borna Coric in straight sets in the finals. The competition has been tough for Rublev, aggravated further by the mishappenings that recently took place with him.
In the post-match interview, Rublev revealed one such tragic incident that happened to him in the recent past. But on the whole, he was happy about winning the tournament after going through a tough time lately.
“I would say that this particular tournament is the most important and most emotional in my entire career. Unfortunately, after the match with Tsitsipas (in Paris), I learned that my grandmother passed away. I love her most of all. The following day I had a flight to Moscow. On Friday there was the funeral and funerals I went to St. Petersburg,” said Rublev.

It must have been incredibly hard to lose someone so beloved and then have to perform the next day. This incident reflected Rublev’s strength. He not only played the tournament but went on to win it.

Rublev certainly played well in 2020; he was consistent. After the long break due to the coronavirus pandemic, he managed to reach the quarters of the US Open 2020. After that, he was able to win the German Open 2020, defeating Tsitsipas in the finals. He even reached the quarter-finals of the French Open 2020, but this time Tsitsipas avenged his earlier defeat.
In the St. Petersburg Open 2020 too, Rublev lost only two sets. This included making a terrific comeback against Shapovalov in the semi-finals after losing 4-6 in the first set. “Winning the tournament now is the most special and the most emotional thing I have done in my life so far,” added the 22-year-old.
