Former World Number one, Andy Murray suffered a straight loss to Tennys Sandgren in the opening round of Winston-Salem Open 2019 in 131 minutes. After his loss, Murray feels the need to work on the fundamentals of the game and he is considering to step on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Next week, the US Open 2019 will get underway, and instead of being in New York City, Andy Murray is considering to compete at the Challenger event in Mallorca, Spain.

“I’m quite aware of where I’m at just now and what my level is. It’s competitive at this level but it needs to be better – maybe I need play a level down to get some matches and build my game up a little bit before I start playing on the Tour again,” Andy Murray said.

Previously in Cincinnati, Murray lost to Richard Gasquet in straight sets, but in Winston-Salem, the Brit could feel in the improvements in his game to what it was in Ohio.

“Some things were a bit better today, I think. I was hitting the ball a bit cleaner than I did in Cincinnati. I feel like I moved fairly well to some drop shots, which may be last week I wasn’t running to.”

“So there are some good things in there but also some stuff I would like to do better. Physically, (I feel) OK considering, no pain, no discomfort. Just a little bit more tired than usual,” Andy Murray said.

Despite his losses, Andy Murray feels his body is in good form, and he is optimistic about winning matches on the Tour and he believes that the more match practices would shape his game faster.

“I think for my body it would be a good thing because I do feel at that level I will be winning matches each week,” Murray added. “And I think it would be good for my game as well because I’m not quite seeing the points as I used to. And if I can get more matches, I’ll start to work that out a little bit quicker, and see it faster.”

This year, the Brit might be seen on the courts of Chengdu Open and Zhuhai Championships in China and the tournaments will take place in the third and the fourth week of September.

“I would probably rather stay playing outdoors because the next couple of tour events I’m playing are outdoors in Asia, but I haven’t given it tonnes of thought,” the Scotsman added.
