Former world number one Andy Murray returned to the professional tennis circuit at the Shenzhen open in China. The Brit overcame an inspired performance from the local wild card entry Zhizhen Zhang in almost three sets. The Chinese had to retire in the third set 3-6, 7-6(3), 2-4.

“I felt he played very well after the first set,” said Murray. “I just managed to fight hard, stay tough in the beginning of the third set and unfortunately for him, the cramps started. It was very difficult conditions.” Andy Murray played his first match since his second round exit at the US open against Fernando Verdasco. However, its only gets difficult for Murray as he faces the defending champion David Goffin in his next round.

“It’s a really good test for me right now to play against guys who are in and around the top 10,” said Andy Murray“I think he’ll be the highest-ranked player I’ve played since I came back so it’ll be good to see where my game is at.” The Brit has played only ten competitive matches since his return in June.

Meanwhile the Canadian Denis Shapovalov overcame a tough competitor and rain delays to progress to the second round. Shapovalov, who is the sixth seed at the Shenzhen Open, was victorious over Ilya Ivashka 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, in a match that transpired over five hours due to a weather delay.
