Kerber is ranked 23. She joins former champions Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka, etc in the main draw. From the top 10 only Karolina Pliskova, Sofia Kenin, Serena Williams, and Naomi Osaka are playing. The rest have withdrawn citing the virus and lack of match practice as reasons for the withdrawal.

Kerber won the 2016 US Open beating Karolina Pliskova. And this season she reached the fourth round of the Australian. She hasn’t played since then so the first round of the US Open will be her first match action in 6 months.
