It is the time for the Italian Open 2020. With many big names missing, this is the best moment for some new and young talents to showcase what they’ve got in the bag. The first round of the event has already given us a significant upset. Czech player Katerina Siniakova has defeated German star Angelique Kerber in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to go into Round 2.

With just 1 break-point won and 5 double-faults, Angelique Kerber never looked comfortable.

This is indeed a frustrating and embarrassing loss for the 3-time Grand Slam winner Kerber. What adds more pain is that the defeat came just before the French Open 2020. She never looked in good touch. Getting eliminated in the first round against a player who had not won a match for almost 7 months must have been hard to swallow.

In a match that lasted only 69 minutes, Kerber could only manage to win 28. She managed to win just a single breakpoint out of three and her 5 double-faults were simply too many in a match this short. Though her first serve percentage was impressive, it was the second serve that proved problematic.

The season is certainly not going very well for Kerber. She was eliminated from US Open 2020 before the quarters. Now, she has been eliminated from the very first round of the Italian Open 2020. This is an alarming and eye-opening loss.  On the other hand, Siniakova must be overjoyed. She gets her first Top 30 win of the year with this victory over Kerber.
