2020 was a wild year, and many individuals sought refuge in gaming. Animal Crossing: New Horizons was quick to garner fame, with its sales shooting upwards on all charts worldwide. Though the year provided multiple choices with gaming titles, Animal Crossing was consistent with its competition.

This holiday season, anyone who sought a gift had multiple choices to choose from. From new games to gaming peripherals and new-age consoles, 2020 was a massive year for the industry. However, Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizon consistently topped the sales charts. This social and peaceful game, with an alternative take on day-to-day reality, provided an effect that made it a hit choice worldwide.

Nonetheless, even after the holiday week, Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to rule the sales lists. The GfK Weekly Top Ten sales chart for physical games in the UK revealed the top ten titles from the last week of 2020. While games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D All-Stars made it to the list, the chart-topper was Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The lockdown had people stuck inside homes for months on end, and that drove a new insight into the minds of people. Animal Crossing might look childish, but many adults ended up playing it. It provided a sense of calm that was most needed during these times of peril.

This phenomenon had an adverse negative effect on other popular games. Cyberpunk 2077, for example, saw a tremendous physical sales drop during this time. Nonetheless, it should be noted that these figures are for just physical sales. Online sales figures might change the current results.
