Arsenal put up a clinical performance against Watford, to register a much needed victory at the Emirates. Shkodran Mustafi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all ended up on the score-sheet for Arsenal. Arsenal was coming off a three match losing spree in the premier league. The number of changes in the team indicated Arsene Wenger‘s shift in priorities. Arsenal, look like they are now going to be focusing on winning the Europa league, having been overtaken by two teams in the race to finish fourth in the premier league. The Europa league seems to be the only glimmer of hope for a piece of silverware, and a way into the champions league for Arsenal.
Thousands of seats remained empty at the Emirates, as fans boycotted the home match, after disappointing recent performances. Wenger was questioned if that was a worrying aspect for him.
“Yes of course I worry because I want our fans to be behind the team and to be happy,” Wenger said. But after what happened in that week, it’s a bit understandable. We are in a job where we have to get the fans on our side and do absolutely everything to do it, to achieve it. And that’s what we want to do.”
However, he urged the fans not to soak in all the negativity that has been surrounding the club in the recent times. “We have still some work to do, but we are on a good way. There’s a lot of negativity. It’s like rain in England — it’s easy to get. I don’t know how much negativity is out there, I focus on my job”, said Wenger. He also added,”I think I’ve shown in 22 years that I can do that, and that I respect everybody’s opinion and I focus on my job with total commitment.”
It was a good day for Mesut Ozil and Petr Cech, the latter becoming the first goalkeeper to keep 200 clean sheets, after he saved a penalty in the match. Ozil became the fastest player to reach 50 assists in the premier league. Arsenal has now managed to win two games in a row, but will now have a tough task at hand as they gear up to face Milan in their second leg match at home.
