Stanislas Wawrinka has had a troublesome time with injuries over the last year. The Swiss tennis star suffered a foot injury in March 2021. Subsequently, he underwent surgery that ruled him out for the remainder of the last year. Wawrinka returned to the tour after being out for more than 12 months. However, he has had a disappointing run at the tournaments ever since his comeback.

Yesterday, the three-time Grand Slam champion opened his campaign at the French Open 2022. However, he went down fighting against the local wildcard entrant, Corentin Moutet. After the match, Wawrinka vowed to come back stronger after a disappointing run of form.

During an interview after his opening round defeat at Roland Garros, the former World Number 3 opened up about regaining his lost form. He said, “I know what I want, I know and I’m convinced that I can renew with a very good level because I have many clues that show that I can do it. But it will take months. But I’m not afraid, it’s not a problem for me to train hard.”

Wawrinka made a comeback after his lengthy injury layoff at a Challenger tournament in Marbella. However, he lost in the first round of that tournament. Further, he endured a similar fate at the Monte Carlo Masters. Earlier this month, he entered the third round of the Rome Masters before losing against Novak Djokovic. As a result of his poor form and long injury absence, Wawrinka’s ranking has dipped to Number 264 in the world.

Wawrinka goes down fighting at the French Open 2022

The 37-year-old could not get back to winning ways against Corentin Moutet, losing in four sets. Wawrinka started the match on the front foot, winning the opening set 6-2. However, his French opponent made a resounding comeback and leveled the match 1-1 by taking the second set 6-3.

Further, the third set was a closely fought affair. With the set going into the tiebreaker, Moutet won crucial points to win the third set 7-6 (2). Moutet carried the momentum in the fourth set, winning the set comfortably 6-3. In the second round, he will face the ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal.
