‘Got to Be a Joke’: NBA Star Nikola Vucevic and Other Athletes Tweet in Support of Novak Djokovic

The tennis world is certainly in a frenzy right now. After months of confusion and ambiguity surrounding his Australian Open participation, Novak Djokovic finally landed in Melbourne.

However, things turned for the worse when the border forces detained him. Subsequently, the authorities even canceled Djokovic’s visa. Many Australian politicians have vehemently supported the decision to turn away the world #1 owing to his vaccination status.

On the other hand, many athletes all over the world have now taken to Twitter to state their support for Novak Djokovic.

Star athletes tweeting their support for Novak Djokovic

Athletes like NBA star Nikola Vucevic and ITF star Arina Rodionova have tweeted about the preposterousness of the entire situation going down in Melbourne.

After his detention at a government immigration center in Melbourne, Novak Djokovic is at risk of banishment. Furthermore, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison himself took a staunch stance against Djokovic.

Bearing in mind the rising cases of coronavirus in the country, many Australians are in favor of this move by their border forces. On the other hand, athletes the world over are not quite supportive of it.

NBA Star Nikola Vucevic, star center of the Chicago Bulls, tweeted how ridiculous the situation was. “This has got to be a joke,” he wrote.

 

ITF star Arina Rodionova took offense with the border forces and gave a humorous take on their decision, likening the whole situation to that of a reality TV show. She said that she’s “pretty excited for the next episode.”

Furthermore, even British football player Ollie Harfield, who plays for the Weymouth Football Club, tweeted about how he views this as an example of the stigma against unvaccinated people.

Father Srdjan calls for protests

News broke out that Djokovic was detained for five hours alone and his phone was confiscated. Then, his father Srdjan Djokovic talked to Serbian media about the situation.

The 61-YO said that he didn’t know much about what was going on but that his son was being “held captive”. Furthermore, he also released a statement calling all Serbian fans to unite against the injustice.

Additionally, he also called it a “fight for the whole world” and threatened street protests against the border forces’ decision.
