Smyth had used her fame from her time in the band ‘Scandal’ to launch a lucrative solo career. When Warhol died in 1987, McEnroe had paid about $30,000 at a charity auction in 1986. He commissioned the artist to paint two portraits of himself and his then-wife Tatum O’Neal. The artist photographed them for the first time at their home. The works were later sold by him for more than $400,000 at a Sotheby’s charity auction in 2008.
