“…Haven’t Won a Slam Yet” – Andy Murray Reveals His Choice of Players He Would Like to Coach

Despite struggling to perform, one cannot forget the era of Andy Murray. The Brit, once part of the BIG 4, touched the highest peaks of the game with utmost grace. However, going back in time, from 2017 onwards, the former World No. 1 has been struggling to perform owing to his injuries.

Seeing his form, questions are being raised over his longevity. However, even if Murray opts for retirement, he doesn’t want to leave the sport. Instead, he wants to be in touch with the sport by being a coach. Recently, the 35-year-old also named players that he would love to coach if given a chance.

Andy Murray is eager to coach potential big shots of the game

Andy Murray announced his retirement in January 2019. However, months later, he made a comeback to the tour. Ever since then, he has been struggling to perform. Even though he has denied any retirement plans, he has time and again emphasized his wish to coach players. Recently sitting in a coffee shop, Murray indulged in a candid Q&A session. During the session, the 3-time champion was asked to name a player he would love to coach if given a chance.

In the past few months, Murray has been making headlines with her fellow countrywoman Emma Raducanu. The two have often been heard talking about working together. Maintaining his words, Murray started by admitting“Female player would be Emma.”

Going ahead in the conversation, he further named three young sensations, Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Jack Draper. “Male player would be between Alcaraz, Tsitsipas, and Jack Draper. They work hard. They seem to love the sport. Alcaraz and Tsitsipas haven’t won a slam yet. They are still very young. I’m sure they still have the potential to do it,” he added.

On the female side, Murray chose the 2021 US Open Champion, Emma Raducanu. However, on the male side, he opted to choose the potential World No. 1’s. Looking at the records, Murray and Alcaraz have faced each other twice in their careers so far. The two first played at last year’s Indian Wells, with Murray winning in three sets. However, just 16 days after his loss to Murray, Alcaraz avenged the loss with a straight-set win in Vienna.

Similar to Alcaraz, Murray has also faced Stefanos Tsitisipas twice in his career so far. The two first played in the first round of the 2021 US Open. Indulging in a high-quality battle, it was Tsitsipas who won the 5-set marathon at the Flushing Meadows.

Apart from the two, Murray chose his fellow countryman Jack Draper. Even though the two haven’t faced each other yet, fans hope to see the two Brits go against each other in the coming future. Looking at Murray, the Brit is currently playing in the Hall of Fame Championships. Sailing over his opponents, he will next face 3rd seeded Alexander Bublik.
