Remember the heart-wrenching moment at Roland Garros 2021 when Taylor Fritz was wheeled off the court after a devastating knee injury? A torn meniscus had forced an abrupt exit, followed by urgent surgery. Remarkably, he bounced back in time for Wimbledon. At last month’s Miami Open, Fritz sustained another injury, this time an abdominal one. necessitating his withdrawal from the Monte Carlo Masters. Yet, a silver lining seems to have emerged. Fritz’s 2025 season hasn’t exactly gone according to plan. After an early exit from the AO at the hands of French veteran Gael Monfils, things only got more challenging. A withdrawal from the ATP 500 in Acapulco raised more serious concerns about his fitness. With injury clouds looming, even his participation at the Indian Wells Masters, his hometown tournament where he famously lifted the trophy in 2022, was in jeopardy. However, the American defied expectations, showing resilience with a solid outing in California, which he then followed up with a strong SF run at the Miami Open, making it his best result in the second half of the Sunshine Double.

But just as momentum seemed to be swinging in his favor, the former US Open finalist was forced to pull out of the clay-court season opener in Monte Carlo because of another injury. Still, in true Fritz fashion, he’s looking at the positives. Recently, the American gave fans a glimpse of his life off-court: spending quality time at home with some new family members!

Just moments ago, Taylor Fritz melted hearts on IG by sharing two wholesome video clips featuring his latest companions: two adorable black foster kittens. The American star was seen playfully engaging with the furry duo, and he captioned the first clip with a heartwarming touch: “Injury emotional support foster kitties.”

Though the 4th seed powered through to the SF – his best result in the Sunshine Double’s second leg – he never looked entirely comfortable on the court.

After his opening win over Lorenzo Sonego, Fritz admitted that he and his team were closely monitoring his condition on a match-by-match basis. In the following round against Denis Shapovalov, concerns escalated as he was seen calling for a medical timeout because of discomfort in his hand, a fresh concern – separate from earlier issues that had troubled him throughout the season.

Despite his resilience, the SF match against Czech teen sensation Jakub Mensik proved to be the final straw. Fritz fell just short in a tight 3-set battle, with Mensik delivering 25 aces in a 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4) victory. Following that, Fritz not only pulled out of the clay-court opener in Monte Carlo but also withdrew from the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (U.T.S.) exhibition event, stating “I aggravated an abdominal injury during my semifinal match in Miami, and I will not be able to recover in time to compete in Nimes this week,”

Despite this early setback in the clay-court swing, Taylor’s coach, Michael Russell, recently shared insights into what Fritz needs to focus on to achieve greater success at the Grand Slam level.

“Come to the net more,” Michael Russell shares his coaching tactics for Taylor’s GS success

Taylor Fritz had a standout 2024 season, bagging titles in Delray Beach and Eastbourne, and making deep runs at major events. His historic US Open run saw him become the 1st American man to reach an SF since Andy Roddick in 2009, followed by a runner-up finish at the ATP Finals, both times falling short against Jannik Sinner.

These performances catapulted him to a career-high 4th seed. Now, with eyes set on Roland Garros, his coach Michael Russell recently revealed that Fritz’s primary goal is Grand Slam glory, and to become a consistent contender on all surfaces.

Speaking to the Tennis Channel, Michael Russell said, “I’d love to see him continue to move forward; he needs to come to the net more, own the transition, and the middle of the court. He’s done a better job, but it could be an area where he needs to improve still and really take it more offensively to his opponent.”

After withdrawing from the ongoing Monte Carlo Open, Taylor Fritz was next slated to compete at the ATP tournament in Munich, where he finished second last year, falling to Jan-Lennard Struff in the final. However, the American ace won’t have the chance to better that result this year, as he has officially pulled out of the Bavarian Tennis Championships as well.

Considering his recent consecutive withdrawals, what do you think about Fritz’s prospects at Roland Garros?
