Legendary American tennis player John McEnroe again fueled the debate about the greatest tennis player of all time. Currently, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic are sitting at 20 Grand Slam titles each. Today, Nadal made it to the final of the Australian Open after beating Matteo Berrettini in the semis.

At the moment, neither Federer nor Djokovic is playing the Australian Open. Without a doubt, Nadal has a golden opportunity to surpass both of them this Sunday. However, John McEnroe has something else to say about the ‘GOAT’ debate.

In a recent interview, 7-time Grand Slam champion, John McEnroe spoke some facts about the ‘GOAT’ debate. He believes Novak Djokovic clearly has an edge over both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. According to the American, Djokovic won against both Rafa and Roger on their favorite surfaces.

“To me Rafa is the greatest clay court player, I think Novak is the greatest hard court, and I would call Roger overall the greatest grass court player. But then Novak has beaten him three times at Wimbledon I believe,” McEnroe said.

However, John wants all of them to win an equal number of Grand Slams to continue this debate in the future.

“Novak also has a winning record against those two. He is slightly ahead of those two but in a weird way I hope they all end up on the same number so we can have this discussion for the next 10 years and it will just be a matter of opinion and no one would be wrong,” McEnroe further said.

Nadal may win the GOAT debate on Sunday

Earlier today, Nadal beat Matteo Berrettini by 6-3,6-2,3-6,6-3 to reach his 6th Australian Open final. The Spaniard will now face Daniil Medvedev, the no.2 seed. In the second semi-final today, Daniil defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas by 7-6,4-6,6-4,6-1 in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Rafa has a greater head-to-head advantage over Medvedev by 3-1. This is the first time they will face each other in a Grand Slam final since the 2019 US Open final where Nadal won in five sets. However, Medvedev is not the same player he was in 2019. On Sunday, he can pose a big threat to Rafael Nadal’s chances of winning the historic 21st Grand Slam title.
