Novak Djokovic Hopes To Make History Wiped Off As the Latest US Open Rule Makes His Ban Imminent

Novak Djokovic, the reigning Wimbledon Champion, likely participated in his final Grand Slam event of the year in London. Following an update on Covid regulations, the US Open has indicated that Novak Djokovic won’t be allowed to enter the country or participate in the prestigious tournament.

On the other hand, Djokovic is waiting patiently to see if the US government relaxes its travel restrictions in time for him to compete in the US Open.

US Open issued a public announcement

To ensure the safety and security of participants during the two-week event, the organizers of the Grand Slam event have informed international supporters that they would not be permitted entry into the country without proof of vaccination.

“At this time, ticket holders will not be required to show proof of COVID vaccination for admission into the US Open,” a statement on their website reads.

The statement proceeds with “However, please note that if you are traveling from abroad to attend the US Open, you must be fully vaccinated with the primary series of an accepted COVID vaccine to travel to the United States (this applies to non-U.S. citizens and/or non-U.S. immigrants).”

With barely over a week till the grand slam, the US Open has released an open statement. The declaration reaffirmed the Grand Slam’s vaccination requirements. However, the organizers have recently acknowledged that they would use Covid-related guidelines.

Along with the US Open, the Rogers Cup also barred the 21-time Grand Slam champion from competing. Similarly, other tournaments in the US and Canada also enforced the ban.

Earlier this year, he received a similar suspension at the sunshine doubles. It forced Djokovic to withdraw from the Miami Open and Indian Wells. Due to the US policy of not allowing unvaccinated international travelers into the country, the former World No. 1 will not participate in the North American hard-court swing, despite being permitted to play in Europe.

Djokovic is still listed as a participant for the US Open and has not yet withdrawn. The World No. 6 is expected to hold off until the very last minute, hoping the government relaxes its travel policies, in time for him to compete.
