“Terribly Unfair”: Timea Babos Hits Out at US Open 2020 Organizers for Causing “Mental Damage”

Frenchman Benoit Paire testing positive for COVID-19 at the 2020 US Open has sent the organizers into deep chaos. Matches are getting delayed and players are being asked to isolate themselves. However, the latest controversy takes the cake. Number 1 doubles seeds Kristina Mladenovic and Timea Babos were forced to withdraw from the tournament due to their prolonged contact with the Frenchman. Following this, Babos expressed her outrage on social media.
Reportedly, Mladenovic was one of the players in close contact with Paire. After initially imposing strict quarantine rules for Mladenovic and six others, the authorities further tightened the knot on these “at-risk” players.
Mladenovic and Bobas, who had a match scheduled in court 11, were asked to withdraw from the tournament. The US Open’s protocols kept getting stricter. First, the organizers removed their match from the draw. Later, it was revealed that they had been removed from the tournament itself.

Timea Babos vents her frustration at the US Open 2020 organizers
Timea Babos had no option but to fly back home after she withdrew from the tournament. It was disheartening to learn that the organizers asked a team to refrain from playing any further, especially in a prestigious tournament like the US Open.
However, certain protocols stand firm and the players have to come to terms with their fate. Timea Babos may have accepted the cruel end to her US Open campaign. But that didn’t stop her from venting her anger at the decision making procedure.

“I haven’t really had time for anything so far, so now I’m just starting to realize what happened and I just don’t understand. It’s all terribly unfair, I don’t see any acceptable reason why this should have been the case,” Babos wrote.
The Hungarian athlete then explained the details about the results of their COVID tests, which as per her, mostly came out negative. Babos also pointed out the Adrian Mannarino controversy, and how he was awarded a chance to play but her team was deprived of it.

“Simply an injustice! Incomprehensible! It’s not fair and I could list more,” Babos said, about the way her team was treated. Their genuine chance at Championship glory further exacerbates the disappointment.
One can definitely back Babos up on her claim. She and Mladenovic are one of the top doubles seeds and #1 in this year’s US Open tourney. This duo clinched the 2018 Australian Open and have dominated several opponents.
