Russian World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev is three matches away from his maiden Grand Slam glory. Indeed, he has played some world-class tennis at the Australian Open 2021. But what gives him an edge over the others? Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou explains.

To put things into perspective, Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou distinguished the changes in Medvedev’s game from 2019 to now. According to the Coach, the major improvement in his game has been his attack.

“The old Medvedev was a nightmare to play when you were giving him rhythm, very difficult to put out of position. And at some point, when you play Medvedev, you feel like ‘I cannot hit a winner. This guy is everywhere’,” he said.

What’s more, Mouratoglou highlighted that the Russian lacked the pace earlier, but now that has changed. “Now, he can attack and especially with his forehand, which is not his best shot. I think his backhand is much more solid,” the French coach said.

His aggressive attacks are the reason why people maintain that the ATP Finals winner is also a potential winner of the Happy Slam, Mouratoglou believes. Later on, the coach talked about the current year-end tournament winner’s weakness.

Patrick Mouratoglou explains what Daniil Medvedev hates on the court

Patrick said, “His weakness is on the short low balls. He hates slice on the service line, because he has to move inside the court, and he cannot attack the ball because he doesn’t have this topspin.”

And since he is in no man’s land, it makes a short low ball his most difficult situation. Apart from that, Daniil Medvedev’s game is flawless.

In finality, Mouratoglou concluded that because he serves and returns well, players hate to play him. And also, because he forces the opponents to hit near the lines and when they start missing, he attacks with precision.
