Just when fans were expecting to see the Argentinian back on-court with his previous glory, Del Potro announced in the press that he will retire from tennis after playing the tournaments in Buenos Aires and Rio.

“I never imagined my retirement from tennis, but there couldn’t be any better tournament to do it than this tournament[the Argentina Open]. I wanna live like a 33 years old person, without pain,” Argentinian told reporters.

While announcing the news, Del Potro got emotional which reveals his love for the game. Del Potro later explained that he always maintained a low profile and liked to talk only on-court, through his game. That was the reason why the Argentinian became quite emotional while announcing the news.

The 2009 US Open champion continued, “I worked three months to play in Buenos Aires. Perhaps what frustrates me is the pain in my leg. I would like it to be less to face everything differently. But it is what I have to do. My team does not wants me to lower my arms to know my capacity.”

Del Potro has been unfortunate when it comes to injuries throughout his career. He always had to take breaks from the sport to recuperate from the injury. The last few years might have been incredibly difficult for Del Potro in terms of pain and from that stand point, his decision appears apt as any athlete wishes to be pain-free by the end of their professional career.

After an emotional press conference, fans thronged to see the Argentinian as he patiently greeted all of them before leaving.

From the press conference, it seems evident that Del Potro has been planning his retirement since late last year as he informed his team to prepare him for the tournament at Buenos Aires. The Argentinian wants to play his last few matches in-front of his home crowd.

“Beyond the anguish and sadness, I want Tuesday to be an unforgettable day. Having the tournament in Buenos Aires close at this moment of my knee made me feel like it was now or never again”, explained the Argentinian.

All in all, the tower of Tandil will be surely missed on the ATP tour as his forehand and serve will be an inspiration for youngsters who wish to achieve success in this sport.
