Stefanos Tsitsipas may have won the coveted ATP World Tour Finals a couple of years ago, but he couldn’t manage to live up to the expectations in several Masters 1000 tournaments.

On Sunday, when the Greek faced Andrey Rublev in his third Masters 1000 final, the pressure of winning must be riding high on Tsitsipas. However, he overcame the pressure and emerged victorious by dismantling Rublev in straight sets, 6-3,6-3 to win his first Monte Carlo title.

Stefanos Tsitsipas had a tough-luck at Masters 1000 tournaments

It’s almost impossible to predict the performance of a player who promises abundant talent on a tennis court. While the talent of Tsitsipas is evident to the tennis world, he was self-destructive on-court a lot of times before.

There have been a lot of instances where the Greek lost matches from a winning position. Even the two Masters finals he reached in 2018 and 2019 had Nadal and Djokovic as the finalists, and their big-match experience became too much for Tsitsipas to handle.

In the Monte Carlo Masters this year, the early losses suffered by Nadal and Djokovic also helped the Greek in winning the title.

Responding to the reporters after his monumental victory said, Tsitsipas explained how much the title meant to him, “I wanted the title so much. I was fighting for a long time, it was tough. It’s not easy having so much stress every day. I think that today’s win is more important.”

Monte-Carlo victory gives Tsitsipas the required momentum

Ever since his arrival on the big stage, Tsitsipas was touted to become a grand slam champion by fans and experts alike. But the dominance of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the majors alongside several Masters 1000 tournaments have halted players like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev to climb to the next level.

Even though the defeats of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the Monte-Carlo Masters this year might be a one-off affair, it’s important to note that they are beatable. If the next generation stars can do it consistently at the Masters’ tournaments, they will be able to penetrate the Big-3 dominance in the grand slams as well.

The victory at the Monte-Carlo Masters was the sixth ATP title in Stefanos Tsitsipas’ career. Incidentally, the Greek won the tournament 40 years after his mother won the junior event.
