The Italian player lost the first set in close tie-breaker against Alexander Zverev and injured his left oblique during the second set. The injury was quite bad and Matteo Berrettini had to retire in the middle of the match. As a result, Alexander Zverev got a walkover.

After his injury, Berrettini will undergo some scans and then decide if he is fit enough to play on Tuesday or not. “Not being able to finish the match is killing me”- Berrettini

In the post-match interview, Berrettini claimed that it was one of the best atmosphere that he had witnessed in his career during the match against Zverev. Thus, he stated that he is feeling really bad about not finishing the match.

“The atmosphere was one of the best I ever felt in my life. It was unbelievable. That is probably why I feel so bad right now. Not being able to finish the match is killing me. It is just really tough to face. I really wanted to enjoy every second, that’s what we said as a team. The worst thing that could have happened, happened,” explained the Italian.

Matteo Berrettini has a lot of crowd support since the ATP Finals 2021 are taking place in Turin, Italy this year. Thus, it will be intriguing to watch if somehow manages to make a comeback and play in his remaining matches there. If he isn’t able to compete, fellow Italian Jannik Sinner, who is the alternate, will come in and participate.
