Miami Open, the second Masters 1000 event of the year on the ATP tour, and third on the WTA tour gets underway this week. Hubert Hurkacz is the defending champion on the men’s side of the draw. On the contrary, Ashleigh Barty, who won the title last year will not feature at this year’s Miami Open, citing the need for ongoing recovery.

Top Seeds and Defending Champion of Miami Open

Hubert Hurcakz, the defending champion will begin his journey in the second round after receiving a bye in the opening round in Miami. However, Ashleigh Barty still needs time to recover and will not be able to defend her title at the Miami Open. The Australian woman has been out of the tour since her triumph at the Australian Open.

World no.2 Daniil Medvedev is the top seed on the men’s side of the draw. Aryna Sabalenka occupies the spot of the top seed on the women’s side of the draw. Other top seeds on the men’s side of the draw are Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, along with emerging players such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jenson Brooksby. Alongside Sabalenka, the top seeds on the women’s side of the draw are Indian Wells champion, Iga Swiatek, Anett Knotaveit, Paula Badosa, and Maria Sakkari.

Possibilities at Miami Open

Taylor Fritz has shown some great potential in Indian Wells by defeating Rafael Nadal, thus creating a buzz around his name. He will be hoping to continue his form at the Miami Open as well.

Daniil Medvedev will aim to reclaim his no.1 ranking after his subpar performance in Indian wells. He needs to reach the semifinals to achieve that. Whereas Zverev, the 2018 runner- up, is seeded second in the tournament. The German hasn’t had a great run till now and he will look for bounce back. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, and Matteo Berrettini also have the potential to reach the semis. Following his semifinal finish in the Californian desert, Carlos Alcaraz should be high on confidence. Based on his current form, he certainly has a great chance to go all the way in Miami.

Meanwhile, Swiatek is in peak form, having won titles in Doha and Indian Wells. The probable quarterfinal lineup for the women’s side of the draw :

2nd quater: Anett Kontaveit vs Danielle Collins

3rd quarter: Maria Sakkari vs Paula Badosa

Withdrawals for This Year

Many big names from both the WTA and ATP tours have opted to stay out of the tournament. On the men’s side of the draw, not a single member of the ‘Big 3’ will feature at the Miami Open. Roger Federer cannot take part because of knee injury and Rafael Nadal needs some rest before moving on to the upcoming clay season. However, Novak Djokovic is barred from entering the US because of the vaccination mandate imposed by the CDC.

On the women’s side of the draw, World no. 1 Ashleigh Barty is suffering some fitness setbacks and might come back in the circuit by April. Barbora Krejcikova, who was the first seed in Indian Wells before pulling out of the tournament, hasn’t recovered from an elbow injury and won’t be taking part at Miami Open as well.

Miami Open offers 1000 ranking points and  $1,231,245 prize money for the singles winner and a total prize of  $9,554,920 for ATP and 1000 ranking points and  $1,231,245 prize money for the singles winner and total prize of $8,584,055 for WTA.
