There have been many controversies surrounding the Wimbledon Championships this year prior to their start on the 27th of June. After deciding to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the tournament, the prestigious Grand Slam event was already missing some top players. Moreover, the ATP and WTA also removed ranking points from this year’s competition.
Due to this, many players chose to skip the tournament. In addition, crowd attendance has been low compared to previous years. This could be due to a number of reasons. Let us explore some of them.

Why is attendance at the Wimbledon Championships 2022 low?
8-time Wimbledon Champion, Roger Federer is missing this event due to a knee surgery. During the first day, we saw some banners with Federer’s name on it, as many fans felt the tournament was less appealing without the presence of the Swiss legend. Notably, the first day of attendance was around 36,600, which was the lowest since 2007.
Apart from Federer, many other top Russian players were also missing, including the world no.1 Daniil Medvedev, and world no.8 Andrey Rublev. Additionally, last year’s finalist Matteo Berrettini also pulled out of the competition in the last moment due to Covid; same happened with Marin Cilic as well. Also, 7-time Wimbledon Champion, Serena Williams, has already lost in the first round, which could be another reason for the low attendance.
