Australian Open 2019- Injured Players List

Australian Open 2019 is fast approaching, and while the world has already begun placing their bets on who is going to win, there are players out there who might be watching it on a screen. We take a look at some of the big names, who may not be featuring at the Australian Open 2019.

Vasek Pospisil

Canadian tennis player Vasek Pospisil, announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open 2019, citing a back injury. The Canadian has not featured at an ATP tournament since October 2018. “Very sad to have to withdraw from the Australian Open today,” said Pospisil, on his social media account. “Unfortunately I have yet to fully recover from the back injury I sustained in October. Hope to be back soon.”

Juan Martin Del Potro

Juan Martin Del Potro, who withdrew from the ATP World Tour Finals in 2018, announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open 2019. The Argentine, will not feature in the year’s first slam citing a fractured knee. Del Potro suffered a nasty fall at the Shanghai Masters 2018 tournament when he fell on his right knee in the singles match against the Croatian Borna Coric in the third round.

Richard Gasquet

The Frenchman Richard Gasquet has announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open 2019, citing a groin injury, which has had him sidelined for months. “I hope to he back as soon as possible in February, but in January it will definitely not be possible”, Richard Gasquet said. “I have no idea on when I will be able to comeback, there were some improvements recently but there are still areas where it hurts”, he added.

Sania Mirza

Former doubles No. 1 Sania Mirza, who had been sidelined with a knee injury, has given birth to her son, Izhaan, and will not be competing at the Australian Open 2019. The Indian player, has won multiple Grand slam titles in the women’s doubles division, and is currently planning to make her return for he second half of 2019.

Elena Vesnina

Russian 3-time Grand Slam doubles champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Elena Vesnina also joins the injury list. However, she has a different reason as she announced her pregnancy back in October 2018. The 32-year-old, has been out of action since Roland Garros and broke the news on social media .

Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova retired from the Shenzhen Open, in the second set of her match against rising star Aryna Sabalenka, with a thigh injury. This puts her inclusion in the Australian open 2019 draw, in major doubt, as the tournament approaches fast. Maria Sharapova,who has not looked in great touch throughout 2018, will be disappointed with the start she has made in 2019.

Kyle Edmund

The Brit has pulled out of the Sydney International, with a knee injury, and has cast doubts on his appearance at the first slam of the year.

“I am disappointed that I won’t be able to return to Sydney,” he said.

“I need to focus on my preparations for the Australian Open and do everything I can to be fit for the first Grand Slam of the year.”

Marin Cilic

Marin Cilic pulled out of the Maharashtra Open in India, citing a knee injury. The Croatian, who made the finals in Melbourne last year, will be in doubt for the first slam of the year, as he recovers from the untimely injury. “I was looking forward to returning, however, my knee pains that began toward the end of the season have escalated”, said Marin Cilic. “Treatments during the short off season have been helping but there is still a ways to go and I cannot go into this tournament knowing I am not currently able to give 100%.”

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal, pulled out of the Brisbane International last week, and cast major doubts on his Australian Open entry. The Spaniard, who started his 2019 campaign with a loss against Kevin Anderson at the Mubadala WTC, is expected to recover in time for the Australian Open 2019. However, with Rafa, it’s never too sure, as he is known to pull out of tournaments at the last moment.

Johanna Konta

Johanna Konta is the latest victim to pull out as she suffered a neck injury. She pulled out of the Sydney International where she was due to play Russian player Ekaterina Alexandrova. Fortunately, she could still play in the main draw after securing a lucky loser place.
