Belinda Bencic won Switzerland’s first gold medal in women’s singles

After defeating the Czech professional, Marketa Vondrousova, in the singles final, Belinda became the first Swiss woman to win the gold in the Olympics singles. She came close to winning another gold in the doubles but ended up on the losing side and had to settle for the silver medal. Interestingly, in both the matchups, it was The Czech Republic against Switzerland for the gold.

On being nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year award, Belinda tweeted, “So happy to be nominated as Sportswoman of the Year in Switzerland!! It was a great year for me, but even happier to contribute to what has been an amazing year for all Swiss Woman Athletes. See you live in Zürich on December 12th. I hope you can follow it and vote as well.”

During her 2021 season, Bencic began her Grand Slam season at the Australian Open and came as far as the third round. In France, she was eliminated during the second round of Roland Garros followed by a disappointing opening-ride exit from Wimbledon.

She was next representing Switzerland at the Olympic Games and made her country proud by winning a gold and a silver medal. She ended the season on a better note than when she began, reaching the quarterfinal at the US Open. She was eliminated from the competition by eventual champion and teenage sensation, Emma Raducanu.

We wish Belinda all the best for her nomination after a fantastic 2021 season.
