Belinda Bencic Defeats Donna Vekic to Reach First Major Semifinals at US Open 2019

Belinda Bencic cruises past through Donna Vekic as she defeats the Croatian in straight sets 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the US Open 2019.

Set one

The third women’s quarterfinals between the two friends and frequent hitting partners promised to go into the depth. The first set was just glimpse of it as neither player has had any trouble holding their serve till 4-4.

However, Donna Vekic managed to put some pressure on Bencic’s second serve at 4-4 as she earned the first breakpoint of the match from 40-15. Donna Vekic grabbed the breakpoint with both the hands as Belinda Bencic hit a long backhand shot.

The Swiss, however, earned a chance to get back on even terms as she earned a breakpoint while Vekic was serving for the set. Bencic just smoked back a 111 mph serve to get back on serve at 5-5.

Donna Vekic was destroying the ball from 0-30 to 40-40 at 5-6. The Croatian then saved a set point and hold to take the first set to the tiebreaker. Belinda Bencic dominated the tiebreaker to earn 4 set points. Vekic fought back to save two set points but the 22-year-old closed the set 7-6(5).

Set two

The second set was an equal one with both the players using their serve till 3-3. However, Belinda Bencic elevated her game and broke Vekic to get closer to her first major semifinals at the Flushing Meadows. She again broke Vekic to claim the set 6-3.

She will face either Bianca Andreescu or Elise Mertens in the semifinals of the US Open 2019.
