ATP World Tour Finals: Most memorable finales

It was in 2009 when the ATP World Tour Finals shifted from Shanghai to its current form at the O2 Arena in London. The eight elites of men’s tennis have given some thrilling matches over the past years. But with fan favorite, Roger Federer already out, thus preventing him a dream seventh title at the tournament and Rafael Nadal having already withdrawn earlier from this tournament, the stage is set for Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin, two of the most promising players to produce a finale worth remembering.

Winner: Federer 6-3 3-6 6-1

It was one of the most dominant and beautiful display of tennis by Roger Federer against his Spanish nemesis. While Federer took the early head start and wrapped up the first set easily, Rafa, bounced back to clinch the second with some spirited display and looked like having a lot in the tank, even after his marathon semifinal against Murray. But Roger, who had been middling the ball all week, finished off his opponent in the third, capping an unbeatable week.

The Swiss Maestro captured his 5th title at the year end championship, to finish the season on a high.

Winner : Federer 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3

Federer became the most successful player at the year end championship by beating the Frenchman in a keenly contested match. Tsonga had saved a match point in the second set to force a decider but was outplayed in the final set by Federer. For Federer the title meant a lot as for the first time since 2003 he had failed to win a major.

“I couldn’t be more happy, I couldn’t be more exhausted,” said Federer. He also became the oldest player to lift the ATP World Tour Finals trophy.

Winner: Djokovic 7-6(6) 7-5

You don’t see the top two players playing the finale of the ATP world tour finals very often; this was fourth such occasion. Federer had clinched the number one ranking back from Novak after winning at Wimbledon, which Noval reclaimed later that year. All this made up for a perfect showdown that lived up to its billing. Federer started off the blocks very well, breaking Novak early but the Serb crept his way back in and took the first set in a thrilling breaker.

Federer then went on to squander set points in the second set and Novak broke back before putting aside the Swiss challenge. The finals that have followed it, have not really matched the quality and excitement that these two legends brought to the court that night.
