One of the features that both Microsoft and Sony have highlighted in their build-up to the next-gen consoles is backward-compatibility. In basic terms, this feature enables users to play games from their previous generation of consoles on the Xbox Series X and PS5. And now, the Xbox camp has asserted just how committed they are to it.

“Already Playable on Xbox Series X”

Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management for Xbox Series X, recently published a blog-post. In it, he stressed just how extensive the backward compatibility the Xbox Series X will be. If you thought it was simply a decorative feature, think again. In the post, Ronald revealed how hard the team behind the next-gen console has worked to bring us the feature.

“With more than 100,000 hours of playtesting already completed, thousands of games are already playable on Xbox Series X today, from the biggest blockbusters to cult classics and fan favorites. Many of us in Team Xbox play on the Xbox Series X daily as our primary console and switching between generations is seamless.”

PS5 and Xbox Game to Announce News via Video Series

The backward compatibility will of course include most Xbox One games and accessories, but also Xbox 360 and Xbox games as well. What’s more, the games from the previous generations will be able to hop on the advanced hardware in Series X. This will allow your classic games to be “better than ever before.”

It is obvious that the Xbox team’s compatibility program is rather substantial, to say the least. As if the “thousands of games” that are already backward compatible with Series X weren’t enough, they are willing to do more. The team wants the community to keep the feedback flowing and suggest more titles that could be included in the program.

Of course, many of us will jump at the chance to name our favorite titles from previous generations. However, don’t expect every game to get in. After all, it entails a lot more than hard work on the developers’ part like the licensing and technical aspects of the title.
