David Benavidez on Fighting Caleb Plant: “I Really Want to Get In There and Knock His A** Out”

Ahead of his fight with Jose Uzcategui next month, David Benavidez appeared on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’ podcast. The undefeated 24-year-old spoke about his rise in the sport and addressed his plans for the future. The former WBC super-middleweight champion expressed his desire to fight IBF titleholder, Caleb Plant.
David Benavidez is currently the top contender. Meanwhile, Plant is ranked second in the super-middleweight weight class by The Ring magazine.

Benavidez shared he has been chasing a fight with Caleb Plant for a long time and criticized him for his record. On Mike Tyson asking him how he would fare against Plant, Benavidez replied:
“I’ll beat his a*. That’s the fight I’ve been wanting for a long time, man. He talks a lot. You know, the thing about that dude, he talks like he’s a killer but looking at his record, he has 22 fights, 10 knockouts.”
“So he’s really not like that, you know what I mean? So that’s the one guy I really want to get in there and knock his a** out.”
With the recent Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant matchup collapse, the Mexican champion is now planning to move back up to light-heavyweight to challenge WBA titleholder, Dmitry Bivol. With no new matchup on the horizon for the IBF super-middleweight champ, is it finally time for Benavidez and Plant to meet in the ring?
Is David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant the fight to make?
This fight could make sense as both fighters are in their primes and are still undefeated. 29-year-old Caleb Plant has had 21 professional bouts and has won all, but just 12 by knockout. He currently holds the IBF world title, which is the one missing piece in Canelo Alvarez’s collection. If the Mexican champ secures a win over Plant, he would become the undisputed super-middleweight champion.

24-year-old David Benavidez holds an impressive record of 24 clean wins (21 knockouts) and no losses. He was stripped of his WBC title because of not making weight against Roamer Alexis Angulo in 2020. Even though he is the younger fighter, Benavidez has been more active than Caleb Plant. He also has a higher knockout rate than ‘Sweethands’.

Benavidez believes Caleb Plant would not have fared well against Canelo Alvarez. He pointed out that Gennady Golovkin, Canelo’s toughest opponent yet, could put the pressure on his opponent because he pushed forward right from the get-go and was heavier on the offense through the entire fight.

‘El Bandera Roja’ added Caleb Plant would get overpowered by the Mexican champ because of his inability to pull off knockouts. The 24-year-old suggested that only a boxer who can overpower him and push forward can challenge Canelo Alvarez.
Clearly, David Benavidez has his sights set on the throne. With Alvarez moving back up to light-heavyweight for the time being, it would make sense for promoters to arrange a mega super-middleweight clash between Benavidez and Plant.
