Perception could deceive! And that is best exemplified by none other than Gervonta Davis. He stands five feet and five-and-a-half inches tall, with sixty-seven-and-a-half inch reach. But the WBA (Regular) Lightweight champion defies all norms by virtue of a first-rate ring IQ and firepower. No wonder the moniker ‘Tank’ fits him. The Baltimore-born southpaw is yet to face a defeat in a career that began a decade ago at Washington D.C.’s D.C. Armory. Astonishingly, out of the twenty-eight wins, twenty-six came by way of knockouts, including the most recent one against Hector Louis Garcia.

No wonder the power-packed pugilist boasts an excellent 93% knockout-to-win rate. Born November 7, 1994, Davis began his boxing journey at the Upton Boxing Center during his pre-teen years. By the time he turned fourteen, he had started participating in amateur tournaments. Four years later, in 2012, he won gold at the National Golden Gloves championship. Then, forgoing the Olympic dream, in 2013, he took to professional boxing.

Early in 2015, the young boxer met reigning champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. at boxer Adrien Broner‘s training camp by happenstance. And by the year-end, Davis signed up with Mayweather Jr.’s Mayweather Promotions. After moving out of legendary promoter Bob Arum‘s Top Rank, the latter launched his promotional venture in 2006.

However, as all good things come to an end, Gervonta Davis decided to part ways with the Mayweather Promotions last year. The seven-year-long journey ended as ‘The Tank’ reportedly felt he was in the aptest position to promote his upcoming fights. More so, he could execute his plans with the help of his preferred team.

Though the separation happened amicably, the entire episode left bittersweet emotions at certain corners. Zion Shamaree Mayweather is the second son of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his former girlfriend, Josie Harris. Born on March 3, 2001, the twenty-two-year-old reportedly designs and runs his clothing line called ‘Philthy Rich Boys.’ Immensely popular on social media platforms, he has more than 200k followers on Instagram.

Today, he took to his Instagram handle to take potshots at Gervonta Davis. The post had a father-son pic, with the former helping his child learn cycling. But on the father’s face, Mayweahter Jr.’s face was embossed. Likewise, on the child’s face Gervonta Davis’. Seemingly unhappy at the latter for departing from his father’s promotions, he highlighted how Mayweather Jr. took care of a young Davis and held his hand like a father takes care of his child.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. appreciates his protege

According to an article on marca.com, on December 5 last year, Davis mentioned that Mayweather Jr. was instrumental to his success in the ring. He said, “It’s just a test run right now with this, you know what I mean. I’m on my own. But much love to Mayweather Promotions, Leonard, Floyd, all them guys. I definitely appreciate them. I’m just doing my own thing now. That said, in the future, we can’t work together or anything like that. I’m just trying to put my own pants on.

Reportedly, on his part, Floyd Mayweather Jr. commended Davis for being independent. It’s interesting to note that roughly a year after him, one of his arch-rivals, Rolando Romero, signed up with the Mayweather Promotions.

The two would meet six years later at New York’s Barclays center on May 28, 2022. Until then, unbeatable and with a formidable reputation as a solid puncher, Romero could barely muster any answers to Davis’ quick thinking and finally a “big left hand,” which sat him down on the canvas.
