Unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin doesn’t consider his former rival Canelo Alvarez as the best pound-for-pound fighter right now. Although Alvarez has done enough to attain that status, GGG doesn’t believe the same. Having suffered the only loss of his career against Alvarez, GGG may target a potential trilogy with the Mexican superstar in the future.

The high-voltage fight has been on the cards since their rematch in 2018. Although there are no official developments in the idea, Golovkin and Alvarez have shared opinions about each other umpteen times. In a chat with LA Times Espanol, Gennady Golovkin addressed several things about his career and much more.

“It depends what we take as the criteria. After my fights with him, I don’t consider him the best,” said GGG (H/T:- Michael Benson)

Golovkin arguably handed Alvarez the most difficult test of his boxing career after Floyd Mayweather. The Kazakh star offered his best side in the original fight in 2017, just days after the lucrative Mayweather vs McGregor showdown. As we saw both men unveil a 12-round slugfest, the judges ruled it as a draw. Nevertheless, fans still continue to debate that Golovkin had done enough to have his hands raised.

Just a year later, Canelo Alvarez silenced his haters and beat down GGG via decision. Alvarez then explored other weight classes, amassing the undisputed titles at 168 and a world title at 175. However, Golovkin has retained himself at 160 and is still a title-holder over there.

Will we ever see Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin 3?

Following a successful stint at the super middleweight division, Alvarez is going up to the cruiserweight division with the dream of becoming a five-division titlist. On the contrary, Golovkin has shown no such intentions till now. He will return to action against Ryota Murata in a 160 lbs unification and may stay in the middleweight division until he retires.

If Alvarez vs GGG 3 needs to happen, either man needs to shift a weight class. For Alvarez, 160 lbs isn’t a difficult weight class as he has already been a champion over there. However, as Ilunga Makabu is next for him, this move seems unlikely.
