Boxing promoter Lou DiBella has been a vocal figure in the boxing world. He is also one of the staunch supporters of women’s boxing, often coming out to show his support for them. Moreover, he has also expanded his roster with female boxers, which include unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano, Alicia Napoleon, and Heather Hardy.

So it came as no surprise when Dibella shared his thoughts on why the current two minutes per round rule in women’s boxing should not be made into three minutes per round as done in men’s boxing.

Lou Dibella speaks his mind

In an interview with Best Women’s Boxing Show, the promoter makes his case for the current two-minute round rule after the reporter asks him, “Why no three-minute rounds? Why are you against three-minute rounds”

Dibella had this to say, “Because its the stupidest thing ever and was really started by haters looking for excuses for why they hate, and the women’s boxing product is awesome the way it is”. He then went on to explain why the current format is much better saying, “the two-minute rounds result in non-stop action which you don’t get from the men and with all due respect if women had three-minute rounds they still would not have the knockout rate of men”.

Moreover, he adds that women’s boxing will not get longer screen times even if the duration of the rounds is longer “What makes you think if you can’t get enough TV time from anyone that you’re gonna get more TV time from longer fights”. Lastly, he states his final and most important reason saying,” I haven’t even gotten to the main issue or the main reason I oppose, which is two-minute rounds are safer if your product is historically safer, why change it now to make it less safe?

Should there be three-minute rounds in women’s boxing?

It seems Dibella has many reasons for not introducing three-minute rounds in women’s boxing as he feels that the current format is more appealing to the audience and provides a better product as well, moreover; he thinks that the current format is much safer, which is certainly the most important thing to consider before a change in the rules. Fighter safety should be the top priority in a sport like boxing and if the consensus shows that 2-minute rounds are safer, there are not a lot of reasons to change the current rules.
