WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo has made a huge claim about Canelo Alvarez and their team. The undefeated fighter has long been on the horizon of a fight against the Mexican superstar. However, the fluctuation in Alvarez’s weight has never allowed a fight to materialize between the two.

Despite this, there were rumors that Charlo turned down an offer from Alvarez 2019. However, the champion has rubbished those claims.

Charlo spoke on a livestream on his Instagram account. His comments suggested that there were no talks of a fight against Alvarez.  He said, “Canelo never gave me no contract. I never got a contract from Oscar De La Hoya, I never got a call, contract… I played along with decisions… Canelo ain’t never gave me no contract. I ain’t ever duck no Canelo.”

So Charlo claims they never offered him the fight at 160 and that the rumors of him ducking the Mexican were not true. Alvarez eventually fought Daniel Jacobs at 160 and beat him.

Charlo subsequently defended his belt against Brandon Adams, a month after Alvarez beat Jacobs.

Canelo said he is targeting unification fights in the division rather than shifting to another division. This means we will see the Mexican at the same weight for a while longer. However, whether he will choose to fight Charlo is another matter.

Charlo holds the WBC belt at middleweight but nothing at Super-middleweight. Therefore, given Alvarez’s desires, this fight does not seem likely at the moment. Fights against Plant and Saunders seem more likely.
