Undisputed world super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will face the behemoth Dmitry Bivol for a championship showdown on May 7. Meanwhile, boxing promoter and former boxer Ricky Hatton feel that Alvarez’s loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. made him the boxer he is today.

Hatton was in an interview with Talksport. In conversation, he mentioned how Alvarez became a better boxer after his devastating loss to Mayweather. He said, “I think Mayweather, when he fought Canelo, Canelo didn’t win a round did he? I think Mayweather created a monster in many ways.”

Moreover, he also added that the incident is an example for young boxers, of how a defeat does not define a boxer. Hatton said, “It’s an example to many youngsters out there that if you do get beat, it doesn’t mean your career is over. That defeat, it can make or break someone and it made Canelo.”

In fact, Hatton has a personal chronicle with both the fighters. Mayweather defeated him by a knockout in a bout in 2007. Also, Hatton’s brother Matthew Hatton was defeated by Alvarez in 2011.

Mayweather faced Alvarez at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on September 14, 2013. The bout that was billed- ‘The One’ -was a true showcase of the technical prowess of both the fighters.

Mayweather even took to social media to officially announce Alvarez as his opponent. He also added, “I’m giving fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand.”

The bout was a 12-round standoff between the behemoths. Alvarez tried to show patience and took his time with his shots. However, this played in favor of Mayweather’s defensive style.

At the end of the 12 rounds, Mayweather was declared the winner by decision.
